Seminar: Caring for an older relative Tuesday 15 July 2008 Book places | Programme | Speakers | How to find us In the UK more than six million people are involved in caring for a relative, friend or neighbour and it is estimated that if the nation’s carers were paid for their work, it would cost £87 billion a year, roughly the same as the NHS budget. We particularly hope to welcome carers and former carers to this seminar, but few of us are not involved in caring for older people in some way so the seminar should also be of interest to those in the churches and elsewhere who are trying to support carers both practically and pastorally. The day will begin with an interactive session introducing the issues around carers and caring led by Maggie Leaver who is Chief Officer of Solihull Carers Centre. A Carers Support worker from the Solihull Centre will be staffing a stand all day and be available to answer specific questions. The remaining two sessions will be led by Marion Shoard , the author of A Survival Guide to Later Life (2004) and former carer for her mother. In the first she will speak about the problems (and rewards) of caring and the ways in which carers can find information, help and advocacy. After lunch she will discuss the wider picture and why Christians should value carers and the sort of assistance faith communities can provide. By the end of the day we hope that participants will have a deeper understanding of the important role of carers and their need for support and encouragement and of the assistance available for them They will also appreciate the role faith groups can play in providing support. 10.30 – 11.00 Coffee 11.00 – 11.15 Welcome and introduction 11.15 – 12.00 Presentation 1 12.00 – 12.45 Presentation 2 12. 45 – 1.00 Questions and discussion 13.00 – 14.00 Lunch 14.00 – 14.45 Presentation 3 14.45 - 15.15 Closing plenary 15.15 Tea and departure Maggie Leaver is Chief Officer of Solihull Carers Centre. She has a voluntary sector and NHS background and her previous post involved setting up, delivering and managing the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service and PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) in the NHS in Dudley. There, she regularly worked with carers and carers’ services and covered the broad range of health concerns including GPs and primary care services support. Marion Shoard writes and campaigns on issues concerning older people and carers. She became involved and interested in these fields when her mother developed dementia in the late 1990s. Appalled at the lack of advice for older people and their carers, Marion wrote a highly acclaimed 640-page handbook called A Survival Guide to Later Life, published in 2004. You can find more information about her on her website, at www.marionshoard.co.uk. Reserve your place online now: There will only be a limited number of places and we anticipate that this seminar will appeal particularly to those actively engaged in ageing research. The cost of the seminar includes refreshments and a sandwich lunch. Cheques should be made payable to The Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson. Alternatively you may reserve a place and pay on line.
