Review by Donald A. Bullen
This 20-page booklet makes the valid point that in the growing tendency for churches to offer all age worship, the services are aimed particularly at the young. ‘All Age’ is not always seen as meeting the needs of the elderly as it is assumed that all other ‘ordinary’ services are suitable for those of older years. Ronald Blythe, in a sermon included in this booklet, points out that the only people who can tell what it is like to be old are the elderly. Thus a preacher in the middle years may look back and remember youth but can only ask other what it is like to be elderly.
This Leveson paper is intended to offer suggestions and resources, as its sub-title indicates. It contains useful information and helpful ideas from which those preparing special services for the elderly will benefit. The emphasis is on celebration in worship and meeting the spiritual needs of those who are not different from others but have lived longer.
This is a short well-produced publication that is to be recommended for study by those responsible for the provision of worship.
