The Parable of the Sower: Matthew 13: 1 - 9, 18 - 23

Gardeners Question Time : the Spiritual Version

I thought this morning that we would take a different kind of approach to the parable - here are some questions - try and locate yourself within them?!

1. Question: I have problems with stones. I plant seeds of meaning and purpose in my life, but they never take root. They lie on the surface and are pecked away by every little distraction.

Answer: You are so hard within - nothing can penetrate the surface. You have decided you know everything already. You don't want to let any new reality in. Try breaking up you hard self sufficiency.

2. Question: I am always making resolutions, but I never keep them. I pray for a few days, then give up. I try to think of God more, of other people more, but it never lasts. I get bored so easily with Church.

Answer: Your soil is very shallow - try some good manure - how about reading a book, or going on a retreat or buying a CD of Spiritual music - or something to enrich your sense of God.

3. Question: My garden is a jungle. I love God, I really do, but I find it so hard to commit because I am so busy - I have so much to think about - work, dinner parties, holidays, pension, my health - I just don't have time for God.

Answer: How about a bit of weeding? How about simplifying your life - cutting down on your business and activity - your frantic lifestyle?

4. Question: I have a lovely garden - it flourishes, it's fruitful, it soaks up the rain and the sun and there is so much to enjoy in this place of peace and security and delight.

Answer: That's great news - share it with others - pass on the seed, split the plants and give them away, let other in - help others with their gardens too.
