Job Description

Care Assistant

1. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To work with residents to maintain independence by creating opportunities which take into account personal choices and preferences enabling individuals to exercise control over their life's direction and personal affairs. In doing so, to meet resident's physical, social, health and emotional needs in accordance with the philosophy and core values of the Foundation

2. SCOPE OF THE JOB

  • To be involved and contribute towards the general care and well being of all persons involved in and using the services of the home within the policies of the Foundation
  • To be directly involved in the personal care of residents
    To work with individual residents providing emotional support and encouraging social interaction
  • To work in partnership with residents encouraging choice, participation, motivation and risk taking, adhering at all times to the values of the resident
  • To develop professionally through experience and training

3. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • NVQ Level II in Care or the commitment to obtain this qualification within two years
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of working with older people who require personal care and physical support

4. LIST OF DUTIES

  • At the beginning of each shift aquaint oneself with any changes in the residents condition or situations within the Foundation care complex by reading the diary, daily care plans and reporting to the senior on duty

  • To work well within the team with the residents, their families, colleagues and outside agencies

  • To assist with preparation of simple refreshments at times when kitchen staff are not on duty

  • To help residents with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including incontinence, help in the use of care aids and personal equipment

  • Make and change beds, assist in the care of personal clothing, empty commodes and do some light cleaning, e.g. wheelchairs, personal drawers and cupboards

  • Answer aid calls, the door and telephone when necessary. Greet visitors to the Court

  • To undertake such personal care duties as may be required for individual residents in the care complex, ie at mealtimes, serving and cutting up food; bathing; assisting with dressing/undressing; personal cleanliness and appearance, including the removal and hygienic disposal of soiled clothing, the management of incontinence wear, aid and similar items

  • Care for residents who are temporarily sick, e.g. bed care, mouth care and minor dressings, and to help care for those who are dying

  • To participate with escorting and assisting residents, as required, in and around the care complex. It will also be necessary from time to time to escort residents to obtain services not available in the care complex, and to encourage the use of recreational, educational and leisure facilities in the care complex and community

  • To encourage residents to maintain independence, taking into account their physical and emotional condition and to stimulate their participation in the running of the Court

  • To pass on to other staff, any incidents which may have relevance to the residents' individual plans

  • To be familiar with the location and operation of all lifting and hoisting equipment and to be prepared to attend short courses on lifting and handling techniques

  • To participate in the updating of residents' care plans

  • All employees and volunteers have a responsibility to ensure health and safety of all persons at work, including service users, visitors and members of the public in all premises owned or controlled by the Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson

  • To attend staff & individual meetings & training courses as appropriate

  • To undertake any other reasonable duties requested
